recipe: make it again calzones

In the interest of frugality, I have been trying to think of creative ways to use leftovers. Plus it keeps things interesting. And in the sprit of that, I wanted to share a recipe for using my Homemade Meat Sauce again (in a way other than over pasta).  This is a great recipe for kids! They can even help assemble the calzones. If you’re looking to lighten up the recipe, you can add in a bunch of vegetables and use light cheese. As is, the crust is 240 calories per serving without including any toppings or fillings.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Homemade Meat Sauce
  • 2 cups shredded (light) mozzarella cheese
  • Toppings that you want to include (e.g. grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni, sausage, olives, other cheeses)
  • Refrigerated pizza dough
  • 2 Tbsp butter (melted)

Unroll pizza dough and roll out until 10″ x 14″. Cut into 4 even squares that are 7″ by 5″.  Layer your toppings on one half of each square leaving a 1/2 inch border on all sides. Fold the dough over in half and seal the edges with a fork. Brush the tops of the calzones with the melted butter.

Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
